Kapiti Depot Weekend Short Course August 2023

CQC drill skills to command

The weekend short course August, 12 and 13 at Brent’s Kapiti depot provided the keen and willing attendees with two full days of primary option military self-defence and military close combat training for civilian enthusiasts.

This training included Phase 1 Basic and Phase 2 Advanced training conducted separately.

Like with the progressive ever evolving tradecraft that our military self-defence and military close- quarters combat is always striving for excellence, so is our training provision.

The training must be delivered commensurate with in the exponent’s capabilities and for the serious is a project to be continued not a task to be completed. They are either dedicated and committed or they are not.

Every such course attracts those that identify as serious committed enthusiasts and for them, it is the finding of what they be looking for in self- protection and close combat training.

This most recent Kapiti course surpassed previous such courses in instruction delivered and outcomes achieved, proving the power of those that are willing and committed to combative self-improvement can make a course that much more of a beneficial learning and improving experience.

The attendees were a diverse group of enthusiasts all looking for the most current proven training in true military close combat and military self- defence.

Having instructors from Wellington, Kapiti and Foxton in attendance assisting and training with new entry level exponents was not only beneficial for the weekend short course but also enabled the instructors to plan as a group for the conducting of combined training to include the new exponents with existing training exponents. The power of positive instructors and exponents joint training to achieve the best outcomes is what comes from such training gatherings.

There is nothing better than training in the outdoors for military CQC and at Brent’s Kapiti depot the environment is really fit for purpose and Brent and his family’s hospitality made the experience that much better.

All attended with enthusiasm and diligently trained at a fitting enabling level getting on with their practising of the instructed skill sets.

Post Covid has required flexible initiatives to ensure full calendars of courses and HQ training are provided and this is something we have achieved.

Being a unique small specialist training provider, with a history and lineage of no other such training provider is truly advantageous even in difficult recruiting times. The type of people we get on courses by majority do their research check out instructor’s lineage and credentials and know what they are looking for and this was very much the case with the attendees on this recent Kapiti course. Some attendees had done their research on Master Chief Instructors from yesteryear and were well read on the history of Allied military close combat.

They were very interested in the Todd Groups long history and instructor qualification lineage with some of the expert instructors from World War II and the next generation of Master-Chief instructors.

Training those that have done their research on our tradecraft systems combined with having willing hands on training interest generally equates to exponents that are eager to learn and challenge themselves. Such individuals of the same or similar interests make course conducting run like clockwork enabling best use of all available time.

There were no ego or attitude issues and the attendees helped one and other and conducted themselves with safety in mind and with respect for their fellow exponents and respect for the chain of command.

The weekend Kapiti course vibe level of interest and enthusiasm was testament to the attending exponents positive responsible attitudes and positive attributes.

There were seven first time Phase 1 Basic attending exponents on course as well as the Phase 2 advanced members and Phase 3 Specialist proponents.

Planning is under way for more courses at the Kapiti depot and ongoing combined depots training.

To future proof training provision we must identify those that are up for the challenge of testing and that have the grit and desire to achieve rank.

Individual unitism as I call it is vital on combined depots courses and equates to exponents and proponents being confident and competent as well as current in their capabilities as individuals and equally willing and capable as team and group members under the provision of combined depot’s training.

The benefits of combined depot’s training like the weekend Kapiti course and our HQ and Thailand courses are important in the development of individuals through exposure to others training in the same systems but of different levels of proficiency and physicality.

Our mil CQC/MSD for civi enthusiasts is about striving for ones best capabilities challenging and testing oneself as part of being the best exponent or proponent one can be and combined attendees courses really provide an environment that fosters individual’s development and advancement.

Not everyone is up for the challenges involved with achieving rank and advancement and some just want to learn tactics and skills for their self-protection and that is fine under our training regime but to advance testing and passing testing is a must.

Conducting courses such as the weekend Kapiti course enables likeminded people of same or similar interests to train together and benefit from such a positive learning environment.

The next Kapiti course will most likely be a summer course not that the weather mattered over the weekend as the best courses are always the rural outdoors courses.

Writing this course report I could not think of a single negative aspect of this training experience and this is testament to the attendees and their attitudes motivation and wanting to be part of this group training experience.

I look forward to seeing these and more such lads and lasses on future courses at Kapiti or HQ and assisting with their progression.
