They must be able to fit in to a training detail as well as be able to conduct themselves as an individual.

Todd Group specialist close protection courses include combined training and training exercises in both New Zealand and Thailand.

We are the only training provider in NZ that provides such a unique training experience.

Every delivered tradecraft lecture subject includes hands-on practical training and employment of the skills on training exercises.

CPP CQB/CQC Initial Familiarisation Introductory Training

We are the doctrine holders and are tactics and skills developers and as such our understudies get their training from the headquarters source.

Close personal protection like military CQC must be a living package to ensure operators are armed with the most current primary skills to effectively protect their clients and themselves.

From evasive driving to aggressive Ramming, and live fire close protection related shooting through to actions on escape and evasion and wide-ranging threat neutralisation. The course will get to experience all such training hands on.

At Camp Todd and Todd Group HQ facilities combined with our international hub country of Thailand facilities and with the assistance of our allied facilitators we are enabled to conduct exported leading extensive subject matter courses of instruction.

We are committed to providing our highest-level specialist training provision and all required tradecraft skill sets necessary to work in close protection.

We have over a 90-year history in our specialist fields of expertise and a record of service as a private specialist training provider to the military, law enforcement and close protection sector of no other private training organisation in New Zealand.

Demand is looking like we will have to conduct multiple specialist small group CPP courses annually from 2020.

Being able to export small group specialist courses providing the full CPP range of training skills we do makes interest in CPP courses ever increasing.

Most exponents on courses applied by referrals and many from referrals from former or current instructors and exponents that have undertaken not only our CPP courses, but also CQC courses of instruction.

This combined with close personal protection, being a phase 3 specialist proponents training requirement required to complete their 500+ hours of mandatory phase 3 combative skills training ensures there is internal recruited courses attendees on most if not all CPP courses.

Outside of our Todd Group exponents and proponents on CPP courses, musters are made up of current close protection operators as well as new entry individuals wanting to up skill to be able to seek employment in the close protection industry.

Current and former military and police pers also take the courses mainly for future employment prospects requirements.

A good number of attendees are corporate’s or individuals wanting to protect their families or staff when travelling on business as they are not in a position to have their own close personal protect staff.

The most common reason for them deciding to take a Todd Group specialist course of instruction is that their research has shown them we have the longest record of specialist instruction provision service in our fields of expertise in NZ and our provided proof of qualification and expertise.

They like to read confirmation of proof of qualification and be trained by an organisation that has long instructing records to the military, law enforcement and specialist close protection services.

The Todd Group has the longest private training provision service record in our European military armed and unarmed combat as well as being training providers to specialist police units and diplomatic protection.

Our clients that have undergone our close protection training courses of instruction include Royal family’s close protection teams and protection squads and personnel responsible for the close protection of the fabulously wealthy and major sporting teams.

Through our long record of service provision wide ranging associates and facilitators combined with having our own major training facilities in New Zealand, we can provide specialist close personal protection courses of instruction at extremely reasonable rates.

It is most important to serious applicants that the course is of the highest calibre is current and the training organisation is well known for delivering all the required skill sets to work specialist close personal protection. The first requirement for serious applicants is to identify that the course Chief instructor has high level qualifications and a long record of instructing service before they commit to undertaking the course and paying their course fee.

This latest course included Todd Group HQ members undertaking training and being enemy party as part of the New Zealand conducted training component along with the exponents that attended both the New Zealand and Thailand components.

First week CPP actions on training at Todd Group HQ

Most of the lectures and practical training in the required close protection tradecraft subjects were undertaken at Camp Todd and Todd Group HQ in New Zealand before the International component to Thailand commenced with the rest being undertaken in Thailand.

The medical component delivered on course has been developed by Dr Steffan Eriksson, specifically for our CPP courses.

Steffan is our medical CQC Chief and is also a phase 3 specialist CQC proponent and CQC instructor.

Another of the Todd Groups strengths is our in-house specialist fields experts and our allied associates that assist on specialist role and duty courses of instruction.

The Thailand training exercise components included a rail exercise, maritime exercise and concluded with a land-based longest day exercise.

They were required to conduct an advance for an upcoming VIP visit to Thailand in December prior to commencing their longest day last training exercise.

The course finished on day 12 with a final action’s on CQB/CQC training session.

Whilst CQC training and specifically testing requires combative physicality and the capability to overcome the stresses of threats of violent threat neutralisation, CPP courses are somewhat different in that the modus operandi through meticulous prior planning preparation is to prevent physical threat actions on encounters.

The CPP courses comprise of long hours of instruction combined with the requirement for exponents to be able to follow orders and instructions in detail as given with confidence and competence.

To do this they must be flexible and innovative in their objective achievement means and methods to enable them to deal with situational and environmental realities.

There are so many considerations and factors that must be adhered to, as part of advance planning, preparing operation orders and undertaking training exercises.

For two weeks’ exponents are constantly under pressure cooker realities and as such every strength and weakness is identified and exposed respectively.

They soon learn that all the movie glamourous portrayals of the movie star body guard are far from fact.

They learnt about their place on the food chain and even though they may be around wealth and grand places, there role is not one of taking advantage of such luxuries.

They must be prepared to endure hours of standing ready and alert and be prepared to move at a moment’s notice.

Exponents must be able to make sole operator decisions as well as work diligently and cohesively as part of a professional protective training detail on course.

This latest CPP course was showing the usual signs of fatigue and tiredness in the latter half of the training exercises phase of the course.

Traits and errors must be addressed at real time to ensure best outcomes are achieved going forward.

Exponents on CPP courses must be practical realists aware of their capabilities and limitations as well as be able to recognise the errors of their ways.

Being constantly instructed critiqued and assessed enables instructors to identify the individual’s factual levels of competency and address any errors promptly.

Close protection specialists must be practical realists capable of fluid action skills employments as part of a cohesive detail of like-minded similarly skilled individuals.

Simply getting proficient in pedestrian escort formations takes time and high-level practice.

Competency achievement is testament to meticulous expansive advance work, undertaking security surveys, threat assessments and using all the gathered intelligence to compile the best possible operation orders.

There is no room for overlooking minor or major operational musts and as such exponents on CPP courses of instruction find the training exercises arduous endurance undertakings over the primary three second threat neutralisation duration of a CQC individual actions on.

Training and especially conducting practical training exercises is mentally draining and the psychological stresses of the role and duties are constantly accumulating requiring coping measures and mechanisms.

This is where the Todd Group’s Brain to Boot mental toughness package is so important.

The individual must be able to take care of themselves physically and mentally and be able to switch off any external considerations to be able to properly commit themselves to the requirements of close protection training and training exercises.

The course is now over, and exponents have headed for home while I am completing the advance organisation for the next course here in Thailand later next month.
