CQC/MSD Auckland Annual Intensive Course of Instruction 2017

The 2017 Annual Auckland Military Close Quarters Combat and Military Self-defence Course was a top training experience for all exponents on the phase 1 basic and phase 2 advanced courses of instruction.

The course was an instructor’s pleasure with all exponents on course being willing and committed to achieving their highest levels of competency.

Combat milling training

The advantages of having clear course joining instructions and the realities of exponents needing to be practical committed realists to achieve advancement by majority attracts only the willing realists that are ready and prepared for CQC training.

CQC Lanes

This course of quietly confident committed civilians and military personnel was a pleasure to instruct and the seven days went very quickly.

John and I were on either side of a tarp that separated the phase 1 basic and phase 2 advanced training and barely seen each other between breaks from the start of training to the end each day.

As soon as the phase 1 basic package had been covered drilling the skills begun and the achieve competency of all the good lads on the phase 1 course was very apparent.

The phase 2 advanced course of instruction worked hard at getting through the extensive phase 2 package and preparation for the Friday phase 2 testing.

Phase 2 training

Lucas Magnus School of Training where we conduct weekly training and the annual course is a great environment and a huge training space.

The staff and members are highly committed people, and is a hive of activity with large classes of determined people pushing themselves with their physical fitness and strength training pursuits.

Morning briefs and video presentations depicting tactics and skills, primary requirements for testing provided a mental picture of what phase testing candidates needed to achieve.

This has proven to reduce confusion and provide blatantly clear objective achievement requirements required to pass phase 1 basic testing.

There is no other training provider in NZ that has the military CQC lineage and instructors high ranking European military CQC qualifications and rank of the Todd group.

Being trained in the Todd Systems most current military packages by current military CQC Master Instructors combined with the high level military and civilian exponents on course makes attending these CQC very real and special and the choice of those that know real military CQC and won’t settle for anything less.

Friday morning for phase 2 was final skills drilling and critiquing with the phase to test being conducted after lunch.

Close to 3 hours of continuous testing was required to square the phase 2 advanced test away.

Red, the successful candidate gave every action and response employment his maximum effort and his power to weight ratio was incredible.

Day seven and the phase 1 test was conducted without fuss and with seven willing and competent candidates stepping up to the line to prove their levels of confidence and competence.

From the outset of the military CQC skills to command the high standard was obvious.

The toughener and sickener components of the phase 1 basic testing saw all candidates highly competent in their hardcover guarding capabilities and confident in dealing with threat neutralisation requirements.

Even when their wrists were tied behind their back by means of their self- protection tactics and stamp kicking threat neutralisation they manage to put down their enemy party neutralising the threat.

All seven candidates remained focused throughout the entire testing phase and never blinked or cringed with the contact that comes with the territory.

The self- defence tested modules required the candidates to deal with a testing level degree of sudden aggressive shock action and make threat neutralisation decisions under actions on conditions with multiple enemy Pers coming at them one after the other.

Having to make tactically correct decisions, then adjustments in range position and employ threat neutralisation from a primary status of counter engagement readiness was required to effectively achieve the required objectives levels in threat neutralisation.

The CQC unarmed actions on encounters where candidates are pitted against one another and are required to as quickly and quietly as possible achieve threat neutralisation was of a very high standard.

Whether by means of unarmed offensive assault or unarmed counter offensive assault, the candidates put down their fellow candidates and ground neutralised them by majority in 1-3 seconds.

They demonstrated a high level of skills competency capability in the primary tradecraft practices of military CQC threat neutralisation.

From the roped CQC testing area the candidates were taken into isolation and preparation for their individual battle handling exercise testing.

The individual candidates were called out and moved through the battle handling exercise testing set up that included threats coming from above ground level in both armed and unarmed threat categories.

They had to make tactically correct decisions and execute their decided primary means of threat neutralisation which they done by majority in a tactically correct manner by military CQC trade craft means as required.

The phase 1 basic testing ends as always with CQC skills to command to test the individual candidates capability to listen to instructions, and execute the instructions as a group even when running under the effects of CQC testing.

This is an important assessment tool to determine immediately post high level aggressive actions on CQC testing, if the candidates can maintain a high level state of alertness awareness and are able to perform instructions to command.

The candidates were then taken through the brain to boot CQC coming down and calling off practices to reduce the timeframe of recovery from the effects of CQC testing.

Having a 100% pass rate in phase 1 testing was testament to the calibre of candidates the high level of instructing and the benefits of undertaking week long intensive courses of instruction immediately prior to testing.

This ended another very successful annual Todd Group CQC/MSD intensive course of instruction and testing phases.
