CQC final duty for the 2013 training year

The Todd Group conducted courses and training for just over 48 weeks in 2013 and these courses included headquarters and national courses in New Zealand as well as exported courses to Germany, Thailand South Africa and Australia.

This combined with our military and police courses of instruction left little downtime.

Multiple courses were conducted in Thailand including combined civilian and military training courses.

The exported courses comprised of military self-defence, military CQB/CQC, defensive tactics and close personal protection as well as short courses in anti and counter rape and tactical control and restraint.

The final course for 2013 was conducted in Thailand and included phases one, two and three of the Todd systems of CQB/CQC combined with amphibious CQC.

This final exported course included Thai military operators keen to learn the Todd combative systems and get their official Todd group course completion certification.

The Todd group being the oldest private training provider of European specialist military CQB/CQC of its kind with an 87 year history has operated under capacity schedules with some courses scheduled several years in advance for decades.

Even though we have more than 50 depot instructors globally and over 80 phase 3 specialist Todd CQB/CQC proponents as well as our HQ training team, we at times have been at critical manning levels with available instructors to meet the courses demand.

We always endeavour to meet our clients training needs and this has meant advance planning several years out back to back courses in different countries and making sure every detail of course management has been tended to.

In my early days the general consideration was if you turned a job down you would not get offered again.

The reality today is with such requested demands for our services and our services only, we make every effort to provide requested training for requested course dates but in some cases it has to be pushed out to a slot that fits both parties training schedules.

Professional reputation is earned and the decision makers know who the specialist training are which leads to referrals for services.

We have done a lot to protect the professional ethos of military CQB/CQC training provision by ensuring the practises as taught to us by our pioneer instructors have been maintained and kept current now that we are the caretakers of the doctrine and training packages.

Our research and development is continuous and we constantly develop skills and packages for clients to meet their roles and needs.

The testing and proving phase of individual tactics and skills is arduous and testing is to failure and breaking point.

Course reports logs and or certification have always been very important aspects to record factual participation and training and qualification records that include details of participation course completion and achievement.

Today some certificates are not worth the paper they are written on when you consider they are issued by those that have never come up through the ranks trained tested and qualified themselves in the specialist field of military CQB/CQC that they are claiming to instruct.

We through our commitment to ensuring proper admin and course management practises have always maintained proper recorded records of course completion and qualifications achieved.

We have three main methods of recording and as such providing proof of such details and they are certification, log books and course reports.

These final methods of recording and proving training under taken and standards and levels achieved start with monitoring candidate’s progress on course and correcting errors in relation to proficiency achievement.

Then through tests of elementary training proficiency can be determined and errors identified.

This is followed by meeting mandatory training hours required prior to the test phase.

The methods of assessing and rating individual’s competency levels and confidence are not an exact science but they are a military science specifically developed over decades to provide a factual report of the individual’s skills and inner resolves in relation to military CQB/CQC.

The rating process identifies a definite pattern of achievement and error in a logical order that provides a word picture of the individual candidate’s performance and attitudes under test conditions.

Because most CQB/CQC testing is conducted outdoors the required recording kit is specific to the role and conditions being water proof and providing multiple layers of information recording to ensure a candidates course records are never lost and in 87 years not a single candidates test records have been lost.

The assessment and post course report ratings hand over and processing to the point of final storage is time consuming and must be to ensure details are correct and records safe.

This is how important this part of testing is when you consider it is a qualification and rating recorded on the individual’s records forever.

This is why the Todd Group certification is so important to the proponent and their superiors as it confirms the specialist training stated has been under taken completed and the specified levels recorded achieved.

Such information can be the difference between being accepted or not considered for further advanced combative courses including assistant instructor and instructor qualification courses.

The Todd Group certification is also important for individuals future career desires in staff positions as contract operators and in instructing roles.

The people we attract on our courses are quietly confident achievers and not paper hounds but they understand the importance of having proof of training and qualification and how important it is that such records must come from official sources and respected approved training providers to be of value.

Having not only such a long history in our field but also our chief instructor holding the highest level military CQC qualifications including direct lineage to some of the master instructor level military pioneers in CQB/CQC and being instructor qualified by such legendary master-chiefs of yesteryear makes Todd group certification a respected factual record of military combative achievement.

Coming up through the ranks testing and proving your-self and eventually being selected to take command and control of the official training organisation is the greatest combative achievement and biggest responsibility. This responsibility includes the setting and maintaining of the highest standards and the factual recording of individuals course outcomes along with many other course set up conducting and post course duties.

You need to have senior instructors and assistant instructors that share in the same commitment to providing the best training possible and who understand the importance of strict and to the point testing and accurate as humanly possible course ratings recording and safe and secure administration practices in relation to the recording of final course reports.

Todd Group certification must be earned the military combative way and there are no easy options or political passes so as such the certification is something special that committed realists hold in the highest regard and strive to achieve.

It is testament to training completed and objectives achieved under the control of highly qualified military close combat instructors.

There were 8 phase 3 instructors that travelled to Thailand instructing and assistant instructing on the December 2013 course at the Thai Navy base. The outcome as always was very much a team effort with all instructors committed to ensuring the exponents received the very best training.

In early January 2014, I returned to the Navy base Chonburi Thailand as arranged to present the December 2013 course completion certificates.

Catching up with the commander and some of the participants from the December 2013 CQC course and presenting their course completion certificates was something the combatants had been waiting for and very much appreciated.

This was a fine and fitting way to end a great year and kick off 2014.

Further courses were confirmed during this visit and we look forward to providing our very unique and specialist combined civilian and military exported courses of instruction in 2014.

Our civilian committed proponents on course trained with the same desire and commitment as the Thai military exponents did. Both parties hold the course completion and phase test pass certification in the same high regard and worked together well to achieve their individual objectives.

The key is strict course joining requirements as part of recruiting and this requires extensive factual combative information being provided in regards to what is expected and required of an exponent. Ensuring applicants are well informed knowing what they are getting themselves in for through providing good information on the type of training and skills they will undertake ensures the new entry level exponent is more likely to be ready to undertake the training and has a much higher chance of training long term. The other important consideration with applications is strictly checking applicants backgrounds from their completed application official forms which increases the likelihood of approved exponents being responsible prepared right and ready for such training.

The powers that be are well aware of those who are respected experts in their field by reputation referral and long service records of training provision. Proof of training qualification through course reports logbooks and military certification is clear and to the point and as such the powers that be know their troops are being well-trained by well-qualified instructors with long-term experience and expertise.

The provision of certification from such respected long-term training providers is true proof of training and achievement. Providing documented records for exponent’s that have undergone Todd group courses of instruction ensures we continue to provide proof for those that have proven themselves by means of the required official records of their achievement .

Committed exponents with the smarts seek out respected professionals and purse training advancement under their control as part of their training and often career requirements. They strive for self-improvement and are not afraid to accept the required combative challenges working towards achieving their objectives. Their certification log books and course reports are testament to their efforts and achievements and are important.

It is always a pleasure for an instructor to present course certificates as it not only proves the exponents worth but also that they have done the best in their instructing duties they possibly could have.

So it was with pleasure that I started 2014 by conducting my final official 2013 duty, presenting certificates to members of the Thai military for their phase 1 course completion December 2013.
