Real Life Situations – May 2007

Real Life Experiences highlights the stories of operators and civilians who have had to use the skills they've learnt in self defence or combat.

If you have had to defend yourself as a civilian or in the execution of your duties as a service person, then don't hesitate to forward your story. These stories will not include the identities of any of the subjects involved, but will detail the situation and means used to overcome it.

CQB combat milling really gives the average trained combatant the ability to be capable at close quarters.

I was on a course with an amateur boxing champion who could really bang and during the combat milling against all on the course at close quarters he had no constant advantage and the average Joes on course could certainly protect themselves against his punches long enough to use their CQB which did give them the advantage.

The best thing was that no one dominated all the time regardless of their size or prior training.

Train the way you fight.

On a recent course I was told of how a police officer had trained by disarming a pistol at close quarters and then handing the pistol back to her training partner and undertaking high repetitions. The problem came on duty in a real life encounter where under stress and on virtual auto pilot she disarmed the pistol and handed it back to her assailant.

Even when I was at the academy I realized the training for self defence was far from adequate and that there were far better options out there. I wanted to make my self as safe as possible and took up training in self defence and hand to hand at a private school.
It paid off recently when faced with a bad situation where our academy self defence was not doing the job and my partners and I were in serious trouble.

I used what I had been trained in at hand to hand and it worked plain and simple. My partners were amazed and surprised at how well I handled the situation and I was very pleased that I had spent my free time learning how to defend myself.
