November 30th to December 5th was the last Todd Group conducted combined civilian proponent and military personnel close quarter’s combat course in Thailand for 2015. Three courses of instruction were conducted simultaneously in phase 1 basic, phase 2 advanced and phase 3 specialist.

2015 has seen the Todd Group conduct international exported courses including several CQC courses and a close personal protection course in Thailand.

Conducting combined military personnel and civilian proponent courses has been made possible as a result of the Todd Group instructing team having current military qualified instructors to oversee and deliver the training and as a result of having a 25 year involvement in CQC in Thailand.

This year’s course included Thai Navy and Army personnel as well as the international attending exponents and instructors. The course started with military detainee handling geared towards skills for the Thai military police on course. Military prisoner handling is not confined to the same laws of self-defence and defensive tactics regulations and enforcement levels in regards to policing or civilian security.

The military detainee handling skills provide capabilities to offensively and counter offensively seize secure decentralise and employ mechanical restraints with skills that provide high level objective achievement capabilities and maximum safety.

The tactics and skills are employed in a combative manner exploiting any vulnerability.

Sudden aggressive shock actions maximum hard-hitting impact force including restraint application aid techniques to incapacitate the prisoner making the employment of compound restraints unhindered and ensuring the highest chances of safe objective achievement were the order of this first up training. Head and arm as well as neck restraints including rapid extraction and prisoner snatching skills were well received and appreciated with the benefits being immediately recognised.

The amphib CQC was conducted in daylight hours against the usual late-night amphib training of previous. The Thai personnel on course by majority could not speak English and to ensure maximum safety the amphib training was conducted in daylight. This was a module that the naval personnel were very interested in as it provided primary capabilities for some of their role requirements.

Amphib Armed and Unarmed Combat

From the unarmed close quarters combat offensive and counteroffensive skills in the sea to the use of ligatures and skills for controlling and saving lives where subjects fear for their lives and are adversely reacting through panic were included in the amphibious CQC module.

Exercises including combining land and sea unarmed combat employments provided the opportunity for exponents to prove their skills under assault including under escape and evasion land and combined sea requirements.

The course run like clockwork with all the pre-course admin and facilitation being taken care of by the Todd Group permanent personal assistant and course coordinator in country well in advance of the course commencement.

The phase 1, 2 and 3 small groups trained with smarts and commitment all day every day on course under my instruction assisted by two of my phase 3 proponents in Ken from Germany and Guy from Australia. The phase 3 proponents not only underwent phase 3 specialist armed combat training and lethal unarmed combat training, but also got up their instructing hours on phase 1 and 2 training.

Modules covered on course included ground combat, CQC battlefield takedowns, disarming of weapons including daggers, bludgeons pistols and assault rifles.

The disarming ranged from incoming assault to point-blank ambush phase weapon disarming.

Being able to constantly change training environments from the sea to the sand and onto the training field provided diverse conditions for training.

Living in barracks and being messed in receiving three excellent Thai meals per day made for a training environment that was completely beneficial to maximum CQC training time.

Day five and the exponents were transferred to a military shooting range where a half day was spent on improving the individual exponents aimed and point shooting proficiency and accuracy.

The remainder of day five was spent back in camp completing the rest of the unarmed combat programs training.

2016 will see constant courses conducted year round in Thailand for civilian proponents and military personnel as well as new private training contracts.

The Todd Group will also introduce a new course application joining requirements process that will streamline the considerable amount of administration time wasted with applicants that do not meet the joining requirements or are not fully committed to attending and as such do not complete the application process.

This has been a very successful year for the Todd Group and our exported intensive courses of instruction identifying and proving candidates capable of achieving phase testing requirements one by one. We have a full schedule of courses for 2016 leading through to and 90th anniversary in March 2017 at Camp Todd and the old Todd Group HQ in New Zealand.

Anyone interested in applying for upcoming courses must ensure they fulfil the course joining requirements before the course cut-off dates. www.toddgroup.com
