Effectiveness and safety of techniques

It never ceases to amaze military combative instructors on how some civilian self-defence instructors never properly test and evaluate the effectiveness and safety of their techniques.

All too often we see instructors promoting restraint techniques for security and law enforcement that only work on cooperative passive or submissive people. Hardly high-risk threat, belligerent, formidable foe that are a common reality in violent actions on encounters.

Everyone needs to think about how impractical some common restraint skills are against someone that is aggressively assaulting you during your static restraint employment.

While some techniques like wrist restraints that work on pain compliance may well be effective once applied, they certainly can be risky and problematic against an aggressor that is punching, kicking, kneeing, head-butting, or biting. Many such techniques are unsafe and risky, simply because of their position and method of application.

Unrealistic training and practice where the enemy per training partner simply maintains a static position or even worse, gives up the limb for restraining, hardly prepare you for restraining a goal driven violent aggressor.

The reality is many people through a lack of exposure to violence or through blind loyalty accept ineffective unsafe methods that provide little chance of objective achievement under violent assault.

The same is often seen in edged weapon disarming training where crossed arm blocking techniques are utilised against a razor sharp knife. Multiple fast thrusts can easily slice tendons arteries or penetrate major internal organs. The razor sharp point or edge only has to come in contact with human tissue to cause serious wounds.

It is sad to see  such a lack of realism and as such safety with knife disarming techniques that promote forearm to forearm contact by blocking against a knife holding subject. The word knife holding is exactly what they are facing, not a knife wielding violent assailant.

Think about it, how many violent knife attackers will simply leave their knife holding arm and hand outstretched forearm the forearm.

No disarming method is 100% guaranteed, but when it comes to your personal safety, nothing less than the best of battle proven should be accepted and adopted.

You will never see static dangerous edged weapon disarming tactics and skills instructed in the Todd systems of military CQC.

Likewise, restraint skills will be set up with tactics and skills to  incapacitate distract or interfere with the subjects stability, mental and/or visual focus.

The restraints will be based on utilising leverage and pain compliance through a knowledge of primary restraining containing and controlling body mechanics and medical applications of the human body in relation to unarmed combat.

Everyone needs to think just how effective their disarming skills would be against an unpredictable committed and formidable assailant executing multiple thrusts or slashes.

Everyone also needs to evaluate the effectiveness of their restraint skills under assault and if you identify your methods  against an aggressor committed to assaulting you do not provide high level safety and best chance threat neutralisation , then you need to consider the following. Such Impractical unsafe applications will be overridden under serious assault by autonomic subconscious mechanisms of self-preservation.

The reality is if you want to be the best sports fighter you can be, you need to be trained by a highly skilled coach and if you want to be proficient under actions on assault in a combative encounter, you need to be trained by a highly qualified military combative and self defence instructor.

It very much comes down to doing your home work and having the smarts to best make the decision in relation to the best and most proven methods of unarmed combat and self defence for you.

All Todd Systems military CQC skills tested the destruction.
