Self-Minder Course September 2018 Camp Todd

Intervention Drill

The Todd Group self- minder course was conducted so attendees could achieve capability and competency in the provision of protection capabilities for their family, friends and staff in country and abroad.

Many people today have come to the realisation that they may not be able to rely on anyone but themselves to protect their family, friends or staff.

There is risk at home and when away that can be prevented or under threat neutralised if you have the training smarts and mental toughness.

In times gone by the sole minder was an option for the protection of those at risk.

The required skills are considerably less for a minder compared to a close personal protection specialist.

Having worked as a minder several decades ago before training instructing and working specialist close personal protection has enabled me to provide both types of training.

Minders have always had to be mentally tough and resourceful as they have often been sole protectors of persons under threats of violence.

They usually do not have high level resources or teams of assistants and as such must be prepared to deal with violent threats hands on if there is no out option available.

The close protection specific close combat skills that the Todd Group have developed over the past 90 years provide wide ranging and varied threat neutralisation capabilities.

This self-minder course was geared at unarmed and non-ballistic weapons threats neutralisation.

The tactics and skills having commonality with Todd systems enable cohesive continuation training for the attending Todd Group CQC/MSD exponents.

Some attendees do not need to undertake a full specialist close personal protection course while others were not currently in a position to undertake such a course of instruction. There were also attendees that had previously completed a full specialist close personal protection course. The course provided specific tactics and skills around threat prevention intervention and threat neutralisation.

The course was conducted on the 15 and 16 of September at Camp Todd CQC/MSD training facility. This was a full muster of committed exponents all keen to expand their knowledge and capabilities.

The course was designed to provide minder role specific selected self and other parties protective capabilities drawn from our specialist close personal protection package as well as Todd Group in-house developed skills specifically for a minder.

The course provided security anti- threat and combat and counter actions on minder capabilities required for maximising self-minders safety as well as the protection of protecees under their care.

The minder generally has less time and opportunity to do extensive advance work and write detailed op/orders and as such the minder course included instruction on how to undertake immediate information and write micro op/orders.

From residence and premises safety, security and protection tactics and skills training through to through to principles and procedures for protecting protectees while undertaking travel this short course was diverse and included specific threat neutralisation primary practices.

The introduction included detailing the differences between a specialist close personal protection operator, a bodyguard and a minder.

The minder is often responsible for the protection of individuals under probable threat and is usually a sole protector with minimum resources. They must be mentally tough resourceful flexible and innovative to ensure they can provide the best and safest level of protection to their protectee.

The self- minder package included negotiating and securing contracts information as well as required kit selection and required resources including improvised devices.

Threat prevention, counter and combat threat means and measures were included over the two days of training.

Residential security, pedestrian escort, travel and vehicular protective tradecraft tactics and skills training provided the attendees with knowledge of how to provide varied situational protective capabilities.

All in attendance were military CQC/MSD practitioners wanting to increase their knowledge and capability to protect family, friends or staff.

From hard targeting security measures through to barricading and employing detection tactics and devices, this short course was all about the safest and most effective means for a minder to provide layers of protection to make their protectee as safe as they can.

On completion of the lecture components the practical tactics and skills training commenced.

Instruction and practice was initially undertaken statically while marking time followed by on the move practice of the minder safety tactics and practical protective skills.

Pedestrian escort practical practice combined with risk reduction and intervention tactics and skills ensured the exponent’s had the required practices squared away before the actions on threat neutralisation phase.

The Todd Group being the oldest private specialist training provider of our kind with a 91 year history of providing military, law enforcement and close personal protection training in our same system European military methods makes conducting short specialist subject courses for exponents and proponents already skilled in the Todd systems of military armed and unarmed combat and military self- defence an easy undertaking.

The actions on intervention threat neutralisation where the training minder’s had to undertake fast map assessments on the move and make the best and safest threat neutralisation decision gave the attendees the opportunity to prove their newly learnt tactics and skills under sudden aggressive shock actions on conditions.

The high level of capability under surprise sudden aggressive shock actions on demonstrated by all in attendance was made possible by the self- minder skills being of the same system as their military self- defence and military close quarter’s combat prior training.

The actions on encounters included the requirements to neutralise unarmed, armed and multiple aggressor threats.

Being able to recruit internally makes conducting such short specialist courses possible and the outcomes of a high level. High level achieved definite deliberate fluid action threat neutralisation was demonstrated during the surprise actions on final training exercises at above an enabling level by considerable.

Staying at Camp Todd with full accommodation, meals and training facilities makes such courses that much more user-friendly and maximises available training time.

Being able to relax in camp in the mess hall with fellow exponents, proponents and instructors after a good day’s training is truly advantageous with the conducting of courses.

Unfortunately we are unsure if we can conduct another such course in 2019 due to a heavy scheduling of private contract and public application courses.

Next month, we will conduct a full Specialist Close Personal Protection course that will be conducted in both NZ and Thailand with a long haul flight training exercise between the two countries.
