NZ’s Close Protection Specialist Longest Training Providers

The Todd Group, formerly the Baldock Institute, has a 91-year history of providing military CQC, military self- defence, close protection and defensive tactics training.

This specialist training provision history includes WWII training by our founder, the late Harry Baldock as well as expertise gained from lifetime US military pioneer experts that were involved in high level war time close personal protection including the protection of world leaders.

No other training organisation in New Zealand has the history and tradecraft expertise long record of official training provision as specialist military and civilian training providers of the Todd Group.

Our training provision is not only in NZ but also internationally and includes to military elite, diplomatic protection, royal families close protection and law-enforcement.

We have previously written approved and accredited CPP training courses delivered on long duration qualification authority courses, but now our major focus is on military training provision and training small group specialist courses for serious individuals.

People take our close personal protection courses for various reasons, not only for working in the industry.

There is much confusion over there being a single international license for close protection. The reality is licensing is in relation to individual countries in the security industry.

The Todd Group train operators involved with close protection in all facets of the industry. We attract exponents on close personal protection courses because they want training from the first and foremost training provider in our field in NZ. Most of the exponents on course are there by referral which is the best form of endorsement. Many are current operators in the close protection industry others have been offered contracts subject to training completion. We have trained and provided personnel for the protection of sporting superstars, royal families, billionaires and wide-ranging corporates.

In the last two decades we have provided more training for individuals that want to take care of their own people’s close protection needs.

Many are in situations where they cannot have hired close protection specialists and as such undertaking the training they achieve a capability to plan and take care of their own people’s protective needs.

Civilian close protection specialists require courses that provide training in all aspects of the required specialist tradecraft skills sets.

This is what the Todd Group provide with courses that include land, air, sea and rail training and practical training exercises out amongst the populations in NZ and overseas.

Live fire close protection related instinctive point shooting and aimed shooting as well as evasive and aggressive driving (ramming) are all included in our Specialist CPP courses.

These courses include more than 50 close protection specialist close protection trade craft subjects.

Civilian exponents need such training, but generally do not have the time to undertake 6 to 12 weeks or more training courses that many services undergo or are the requirement for training authority courses that provide student loans.

They do not want to attend courses that provide only limited tradecraft skills training or that are mostly theory and not hands on. They know they need and want practical training exercises in the instructed subjects conducted out in the population and realise the benefits of courses that are conducted in both NZ and foreign countries. require

Todd Group courses now include international long-haul flight training exercises as well as training exercises conducted in both New Zealand and in Southeast Asia.

Undertaking the training lectures and practical hands-on training as well as real life exercises in country and abroad is very different to just classroom training and undergoing mock exercises with static training aides where there is no real life travel and the realities of conducting training exercises out in the populations at home and overseas.

Training exercises in a foreign country where the first language is not English and there are very different customs and culture are a top learning experience for the serious CPP exponent.

Training has nothing to do with licensing which is part of the law of the land and often those that are not in the know are confused about this.

Endorsements by authorities that are not official highly trained and qualified tradecraft specialist in close personal protection and that have never undertaken full assessments and evaluations of instructors or the courses they deliver are of no consequence to the exponent’s we train.

They want to get their training from trade craft specialist training providers that have the runs on the board and are known and respected leaders in their specialist fields.

They have done their homework and know what is required to work in close personal protection and often already have secured positions. They simply want the most inclusive intensive current tradecraft close personal protection training.

The Todd Group having the longest history in our field and being a small specialist training provider, with international contacts and associates have the capability to provide combined national and international courses of instruction and this is what our people want.

Specialist close personal protection is also a Todd group CQB/CQC phase 3 specialist course of instruction that our proponents must complete to be fully qualified.

We conduct short minder courses for our rank and file that include safety and security training combined with specialist close protection specific close combat.

The proof is in the specialist training record of training provision and the level and scope of training provided.
