The Todd Group has the longest history globally of being a private training provider in European military armed and unarmed combat of our type.

Formerly the Baldock Institute our military unarmed combat training provision dates back to 1927.

The provision of unarmed combat training for the NZ Army in WWII saw Harry Baldock take three years away from the Institute.

The Baldock Institute became the Todd Group after I took over as the chief in 1982. My training begun at the Baldock Institute in 1973.

Although it was the military unarmed combat that was my speciality and primary commitment. Harry Baldock insisted I train and qualify in everything the gym offered in physical culture combat sports massage therapy and self-defence as well as Jiu Jitsu.

Harry advised on my best options to train test and qualify in military CQB close quarters battle and CQC close quarters combat.

This included training and instructor qualifying at the Charles Nelson School of Self Defense New York and from Col Rex Applegate in his Kill or get Killed close combat.

As a civilian I was later recognized as a candidate for a military elite forces hand to hand instructor qualification course which is a unique opportunity for a civilian.

I went to Fort Bragg for hand to hand combat familiarization prior to my instructor qualification course in Thailand that I passed.

I have also achieved Master instructor certified in Special Forces hand to hand combat.

Operating as a military CQB/CQC Master-Chief instructor for over two decades and as the Todd Group chief instructor and director of training for our over 50 depot instructors globally has seen me rack up over 100,000 hours in my trade.

The Todd Group has a model based on identifying motivated and committed exponents and providing them with the best of battle proven tactics and skills.

We are not a franchise and our depot instructors keep all revenue they achieve from their depot instructing duties.

We set and maintain combative standards, enforce responsible professional depot training standards and safety protocols.

We insist on exponent application vetting and clearances before any course joining acceptance as well as privacy security and confidentiality for the group and all its member’s exponent’s instructors and clients.

There are required phases of training mandatory hours prior to being accepted as a candidate for a test phase and potential promotion.

There are no political or easy passes and respect of the chain of command is demanded.

All members must understand that course joining or HQ or country membership is a privilege and requires the individual to be responsible at all times.

There are annual declarations for all members and the requirement to remain current.

The Todd Group trains wide ranging military and police services units and groups as well as close protection security and civilian self-defence.

Being the oldest private training organization of our kind and with direct instructor qualifications from the leading military Master Chiefs of yester year gives us a combined lineage of no other such organization.

This attracts exponents and instructors from all over the world down under for training and testing.

In 1996 we opened up applications internationally for our first international course conducted at the old HQ here in Dunedin New Zealand and the course was filled instantly.

It has been conducted every year since and has grown to the level where it is conducted over two weeks now and for all three phases of training at our 100 pers camp set in 300 acres not far from the Dunedin airport as well as training being conducted at our HQ in the city.

Over the decades we have exported courses all around the world and continue to do so.

This year alone will see courses conducted in New Zealand, Australia, Thailand, United Kingdom, Germany, South Africa, Philippines and Malaysia.

This is on top of our military, police, close personal protection and security courses.

In a referral industry where proof of training qualification and records of instructor service mean everything we are kept running at capacity schedules and critical manning 48 to 50 weeks of the year.

Thailand is our global training hub and we conduct as many as seven courses annually there.

We have management and administration staff there on the ground constantly working on upcoming courses.

We get regular offers to instruct on other civilian courses but generally decline as we are all to aware of issues in relation to credibility by association and civilian security issues with publicity and breaching privacy and confidentiality.

We prefer to promote manger and instruct our own courses.

Outside our military and police contract instructing our general public courses are made up of both major numbers of servings peers and committed realists that like to keep a low profile and have no interest in traditional martial arts or combat sports.

They simply want to learn the military CQC and military Self-defence the elite of elite are trained in and learn it from the instructors to such combative specialists.

These serving personnel and civilians want to learn the best of battle proven CQB/CQC living combative training on course for a full week day and night the military combative training way.

The Todd Group through its contacts and referrals has the capability to conduct such courses at military camps in South East Asia and combine civilians with the military personnel we are training on course.

They will through buddy selection of a training partner and enemy party selection be able to train at a level best fitting their capabilities and objectives.

This is mainly because that is what the attendees on course have requested.

They do however like specific combative conditioning training.

Many of our attendees have done confidence courses as part of their service training many times before and others are there for one main reason and that is to train in CQB/CQC and for some to test.

All phases of training join for defensive tactics primary prisoner handling control and restraint training.
