Course report Todd Group HQ Phase 2 Advanced October 2025 week-long course of instruction

Having both the Todd Group headquarters facility in central Dunedin and Camp Todd close to the Dunedin airport in NZ provides the capability to provide both indoors and outdoors training in an urban and rural environment. HQ conducted courses provide non-residential training that fits well with Dunedin residents while Camp Todd residential courses work well for visiting exponents.

The annual HQ October Phase 2 advanced course of instruction this year attracted HQ training exponents and visiting exponents as well as a visiting phase 3 specialist proponent undertaking Phase 2 Advanced assistant instructor and instructor training.

Our ethos is about setting and maintaining high level mil CQC and MSD standards and this requires exponents to complete mandatory training hours before being able to volunteer for testing.

Multiple week long intensive courses or being long term HQ or depot training exponents are the only ways to get up required pre-testing training hours.

We train all our committed members the mil CQC way skills and intensity wise and often our civi serious dedicated exponents, proponents and instructors get in considerably more training time than our services contract trained exponents as they train year in year out for many years.

If they move up through the ranks as an exponent, proponent and instructor they get to train in all Basic, Advanced and Specialist tactics and skills of our systems.

All attendees on this October Phase 2 Advanced course were committed to self-improvement, upskilling and progression and this week long intensive course of instruction from day one to day five saw uninterrupted, committed participation from all attendees.

Phase 2 Advanced training requires a minimum of 400 training hours before volunteering for testing and as such members are required to attend multiple week-long courses and HQ or depot training to rack up the required hours and ensure they have achieved the required high level competency for testing.

Phase 2 Advanced testing is considerably more grueling physicality wise and demanding with the wide ranging diverse skillsets that must be honed to a high standard.

All Phase 2 Advanced testing candidates must surpass all competencies high standard testing levels and this requires dedication and commitment.

While all exponents on this course had not yet completed the 400 or more hours of training required for testing, they certainly trained with enthusiasm and commitment, demonstrating a solid level of skills proficiency and grasp of the practices and principles.

Phase 2 advanced training includes enemy seizing securing related threat neutralisation strategies and contingencies as well as battlefield takedowns to threat neutralise and ground combat threat neutralisation.

There is also extensive training in multiple unarmed and armed aggressors and defensive tactics detainee handling and tactical control and restraint.

The phase 2 Advanced mil self-defence also includes actions on intervention for breaking up of confrontations and coming to the assistance of others at weapon point.

By day 4 attendees were starting to employ skills combining Phase 1 Basic unarmed offensive and counter-offensive assault actions as well as Phase 1 Basic mil self-defence skills combined with Phase 2 Advanced threat neutralisation.

Whereas with Phase 1 Basic unarmed combat being all about utilising stamp kicking, toe of boot spiking as well as palm heel and edge of hand striking skills and hard fingers and thumbs to soft targets to prevent or escape close quarters actions on, Phase 2 Advanced skills provide capabilities to threat neutralise at body contact range as well as in ground combat by wide ranging means and methods.

Control, containment, incapacitation, stunning, seizure and securing capabilities were instructed to provide more diverse means of tactical set ups in threat neutralisation.

There were some very physically capable and strong lads on course that all participated with high level self-respect and respect for others and always executed skills with controlled aggression and commensurate force and momentum levels to that of their enemy per training partner.

These exponents were confident in themselves and possessed not only required physical capabilities but all fitting inner-resolve.

Phase 2 advanced includes a lot of point-blank bodily contact range clinching decentralisation and hard boots footing recovery as well as prevention of enemy fighting arts techniques at close to point-blank bodily contact range, stand up and in ground combat requiring enemy pers techniques prevention escapes and hard boots footing recovery.

Mornings kicked off with the order of the day briefs in regard to scheduled training as well as explaining tactics and skills principles and practices.

Course attendees were able to partake in evening training with HQ Phase 1 and Phase 2 training groups during the week as well as combining with the Phase 3 specialist training group where they underwent advanced and specialist edged weapon disarming that included emergency under wounding threat neutralisation capabilities.

The training week passed all too quickly and before we knew it day five ended and the course was officially closed.

With just one more week long intensive course to be conducted for the year for Phase 3 Proponents in Thailand, the focus now is on next year’s HQ and Camp Todd courses and exported courses advance course facilitating and organising duties and the preparing for our one hundred year anniversary celebrations in 2027.

We provide capacity courses and HQ training at Todd Group HQ Camp Todd, our international hub country of Thailand and at our Europe training depot in Germany to enable our dedicated and committed members to get up as many training hours annually as possible.

The advancement and achievement of promotion and rank requires selfless and strong willed dedication and commitment and our rank and file know there are no easy ways and that most do not have what it takes to become a Phase 3 Specialist proponent.

They accept the challenges and know they cannot get our full training systems elsewhere and that training in our mil elite training as a member is a privilege and not a given right.
